Plot Summary
Long ago up North on the Island of Berk, the young Viking, Hiccup, wants to join his town's fight against the dragons that continually raid their town. However, his macho father and village leader, Stoik the Vast, will not allow his small, clumsy, but inventive son to do so. Regardless, Hiccup ventures out into battle and downs a mysterious Night Fury dragon with his invention, but can't bring himself to kill it. Instead, Hiccup and the dragon, whom he dubs Toothless, begin a friendship that would open up both their worlds as the observant boy learns that his people have misjudged the species. But even as the two each take flight in their own way, they find that they must fight the destructive ignorance plaguing their world.

Bazat pe cartea pentru copii cu acelasi titlu a britanicei Cressida Cowell, filmul de animatie "How to train your dragon" il are in centrul actiunii pe adolescentul Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, fiul conducatorului unui trib de vikingi pe nume Stoick cel Mare, care nu este considerat potrivit pentru a mosteni pozitia de lider dupa moartea parintelui sau intrucat nu dispune de forta si eroism, desi este inteligent si are un simt al umorului foarte dezvoltat. Hiccup participa alaturi de alti tineri la programul de antrenament de pe insula Berk, acolo unde este invatat sa ucida dragoni, proba pe care trebuie sa o depaseasca cu brio pentru a dovedi ca s-a maturizat fiind aceea de a captura un dragon urias. Spre deosebire de vigurosul lui verisor Snotface Snotlout, care viseaza sa devina seful clanului de vikingi si care captureaza un dragon de talie mare, Hiccup prinde un dragon ranit, pipernicit si fara dinti, cu care se imprieteneste in loc sa il omoare si care il provoaca sa priveasca lumea dintr-un punct de vedere complet diferit.
