Plot Summary
AD 117. The Roman Empire stretches from Egypt to Spain, and East as far as the Black Sea. But in northern Britain, the relentless onslaught of conquest has ground to a halt in face of the guerrilla tactics of an elusive enemy: the savage and terrifying Picts. Quintus Dias (Fassbender), sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, marches north with General Virilus' (West) legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth and destroy their leader Gorlacon. But when the legion is ambushed on unfamiliar ground, and Virilus taken captive, Quintus faces a desperate struggle to keep his small platoon alive behind enemy lines. Enduring the harsh terrain and evading their remorseless Pict pursuers led by revenge-hungry Pict Warrior Etain (Kurylenko), the band of soldiers race to rescue their General and to reach the safety of the Roman frontier.

In anul 117 i.e.n., in timpul invaziei provinciei Britannia de catre armatele romane, un atac surprinzator al pictilor asupra unui fort roman situat in regiunea de granita decimeaza o intreaga legiune, singurul supravietuitor fiind Quintus Dias. Luptandu-se pentru a ramane in viata in spatele liniilor inamice, centurionul Quintus Dias se alatura legendarei Legiuni a IX-a condusa de catre generalul Virilus, care are ordin sa ii stearga pe picti de pe fata pamantului si sa il ucida de liderul acestora pe nume Gorlacon.

Una dintre cele mai de temut adversare ale soldatilor romani este Etain, o razboinica cu infatisare salbatica a pictilor, careia romanii i-au omorat toata familia, au schingiuit-o retezandu-i limba si i-au transformat viata intr-un cosmar. Etain doreste cu orice pret sa se razbune pentru chinurile indurate de-a lungul timpului din cauza romanilor, fiind insetata sa verse sangele acelora care au lasat-o singura pe lume si incapabila sa vorbeasca, reducand-o astfel la conditia de animal. Intrucat darul vorbirii i-a fost furat, femeia devenita o intruchipare vie a zeitei razbunarii si-a dezvoltat foarte mult celelalte simturi, in special vazul si auzul, ceea ce a metamorfozat-o intr-o rivala redutabila.
